Obituary for Harriet Wilhelmina Schammel

Harriet Wilhelmina Schammel, 93, of Red Wing, died on Sunday, September 22, 2019, at her home at Valentine’s Assisted Living. She was born in Welch on August 16, 1926, to Alvin and Caroline (Schaffer) Olson. She graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1944 and attended teacher’s training. For a couple years, she taught rural school near Welch. She was united in marriage to Michael Schammel on February 5, 1951, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville. She worked for several years at First State Bank and did bookwork for the family business, Schammel Oil Company. Harriet was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville. She enjoyed her weekly coffee group on Tuesday mornings for 44 years. Harriet was fond of her homemaker’s group, she enjoyed crafts, hardinger, tatting, and crocheting. She also had a talent of playing piano by ear.
She is survived by her three children, Jeanne (Steven) Lindstrom of Arkansaw, WI, George (Patricia) Schammel of Red Wing, and James (Jeanne) Schammel of Red Wing; six grandchildren, Sam, Ben, Christina, Jordan, Blake, and Nicole; four step-grandsons and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael; her parents, Alvin and Caroline; brothers, Conrad, Godfrey, Eugene, and Paul; sisters, Helen (Freeman) Daley and Frances (Wyman) Kilgore and granddaughter, Theresa Lindstrom.
Mass of Resurrection will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 26, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville, with Father Terry Beeson presiding. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery. Arrangements made by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
