Brian James Olson passed away, peacefully yet unexpectedly, at his home on November 15, 2023.

He was born March 29, 1976, in South St. Paul, MN to James and LaDonna (McNamara) Olson. He resided in Hastings, MN and worked as a carpenter for most of his life. Brian lived life to the fullest - enjoying mud trucks, time on the river with family and friends, and downhill skiing. He especially loved spending time with his daughter Carlie, where the two shared a very unique and special bond. Brian was an avid Trump supporter. He was a devoted family member, friend, and person of faith.

Brian was preceded in death by his father, James Olson; grandparents, Aloysius & Edith McNamara, Earl & Mary Ellen Flynn, Walter & Mini Olson; step-grandparent, Hazel Olson; Godfather, Jack White; and other aunts, uncles and cousins.

Brian is survived by his daughter, Carlie Hoffman; step-daughter, Kara (Nicholas) Reich & grandson Luka; parents, LaDonna & Loren Flynn; sisters, Lynette Judge, Barbara (Randall) Peterson, Cheryl (Jarrod) Matsch and Loretta (Joseph) Karnes; and many nieces and nephews.

Brian’s loss is going to be felt for a long time to come. He is with Our Lord and out of pain!

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Miesville, MN with a visitation being held at 9:30 A.M. Burial will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Hastings, MN at 12:30 P.M. with a reception at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel following Mass in Miesville.

Helen A. Leifeld (Kaiser), age 90, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 14, 2023, just 5 days short of her birthday in Rochester, Minnesota.

Helen was born on November 19, 1932 in to Grace and William Kaiser. She was united in marriage to Leo Joseph Leifeld on October 18, 1952 at St. Joseph's Church in Red Wing, Minnesota. Helen loved her family; reveling in her role as wife, mother, grand and great grandmother. She also cared for all of God's creation, specifically enjoying birds, hummingbirds, butterflies, flowers, cats and dogs. Above all, she loved the farm, her forever home.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband Leo; her infant daughter; her parents; daughter in law Becky Leifeld; an infant great-granddaughter Abigail; brothers Harry, Roy, Lyle, Jerry; and sister Mary.

She is survived by her children Eugene (Bonnie) Leifeld, David (Pat) Leifeld, Virginia (Doug) Palmer, Donald Leifeld, Michael Leifeld, Rita (Lauren) Laturnus, Patricia (Thomas) Niedzielski, Mary (Thomas) Siebenaler; James Leifeld; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren and 2 on the way.

A visitation will be held on Monday, November 20, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Miesville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 with a visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Burial will follow the service at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery with a reception following at the church.

The family would like to acknowledge the ICU unit at Mary Brigh 6th floor G wing at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. Your kindness and goodness with Helen have forever touched our hearts.

Kevin D. Schiller, age 63, of Hastings, Minnesota, passed away Monday morning, August 28, 2023 surrounded by his family.

Kevin David Schiller was born on August 24, 1960 to parents Joseph and Odelia (Endres) Schiller in Cannon Falls. After high school, Kevin worked in the construction industry for 10 years and then in the concrete industry, where he worked for over thirty years. He was united in marriage to Cheryl Reinke on May 25, 1990 and had three beautiful children together. Kevin was a handyman and was able to do a little bit of everything. He enjoyed gardening, grilling, carpentry, and fishing. He loved making Sunday dinners for his children and their families.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Joseph and Odelia Schiller; sibling, Baby Schiller; sister-in-law, Dianne Schiller; and multiple aunts and uncles.

Kevin is survived by his wife of 33 years, Cheryl; children: Joshua Chytracek, Melissa Ingemann, Adam (Andrea) Von Bargen, Kristine (Justin) Rumpca, Kirsten Schiller, David Schiller; grandchildren: Alex, Jayden, Cadence, Dakota, Harper, Layla, Austen, Jacob, Devon; great-grandchild Rhea; siblings: Richard (Judi) Schiller, Sister Sharon Schiller, Francis Schiller, Joan (Mike) Norgon, Janice (Duane) Beissel; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 6 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville, MN. A visitation will be held two hours prior starting at 9:00 A.M.

Thomas "Tom" W. Osborn, age 83, of Hastings passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones July 29, 2023.

Tom was an avid gardener and woodworker. He was an active volunteer of the Commemorative Air Force and the Twin Cities Rose Club. In his younger years, Tom enjoyed sailing. Tom enjoyed his classic roast beef, curly fires, and Sr. pop at Arby's since 1973.

Preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary; children, Patrick (Mary), Cindy; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 6 siblings; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, August 3 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Miesville with a visitation one hour prior. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. A reception will follow the burial.

Michael R. "Mikey" Leifeld, age 36 of Minneapolis and formerly of Miesville, died on Friday, May 12, 2023, at home.

Michael Robert, the son of Michael and Brenda (Peterson) Leifeld, was born on March 24, 1987, in Cannon Falls. As a child, Mikey loved spending time on the farm, raising and showing cattle, and was a member of the Miesville Marigold 4H. While in high school, he was active with Riverside Choir where he truly enjoyed every minute of using his musical talent. Following his graduation from Hastings High School with the class of 2005, Mikey continued his education at North Dakota State where he pursued his dream of studying as a Voice Major. He also enjoyed being the Assistant Student Manager of Festival Music Hall. In his free time, Mikey also enjoyed snowmobiling, loved to fish, and was known to have a sense of humor and a smile that could light up a room.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Robert Leifeld and Arthur Peterson; and his Uncle Tom Wald.

Michael is survived by his parents, Brenda Peterson Leifeld and Michael Leifeld; siblings, Amanda (Callum) Deeley and Matthew (Maria) Leifeld; grandmothers, Caroline Leifeld and Arlene Peterson; and by many aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville, with Father Joseph Connelly officiating. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery.

Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and to a reception immediately following the burial, all at church on Saturday, June 3.

Irma Theresa Schiller, the daughter of Anton and Josephine (Ludwig) Schiller, was born November 29, 1931, in Castle Rock Township, Minnesota. She attended both Hampton and Farmington schools, and worked on the family farm until her marriage to Robert W. Freiermuth on November 25, 1948. Irma was a fulltime homemaker. In addition, she was a top-notch bookkeeper and office manager for her husband Bob and son Bob Jr.’s business for over 55 years.

Irma’s passion was to nurture and care for all she loved. Her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her heart’s center.

Irma was a hard worker; idleness was not in her DNA. She loved the outdoors, tending her flower gardens that attracted the country wildlife, mowing the yard, washing cars and trucks, golfing, traveling, and basically doing anything to be outside. She also loved playing cards and games with family and friends every chance she could get. Hosting holiday gatherings with family and making an over abundance of delicious food was especially mom’s pride and joy.

Irma and Bob spent many days with family and friends between their homes in Arizona, their Wisconsin cabin and here in Hastings, as well as many travels.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; and brother, Maynard Schiller.

Irma is survived by her children, Bob Jr. (Dianne Kreiger) Freiermuth, Linda (Wesley) Ask, Sandy (Alan) Blankenship, Luann (Ben) Tims and Susan (Paul) Beskau; 16 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren; brother, Jerry (Rosemary) Schiller; sisters-in-law, Dolores Schiller, MaryAnn Otto and Rosalie (Gerald) Rother; and by many other relatives and friends.

Family and friends are cordially invited to a Celebration of Irma's Life from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 3, 2023, at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings, with a service to follow. Private family interment will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in New Trier.

In lieu of flowers, Irma's family requests memorials be given to Grace Hospice in her memory.

Dale E. McDonald, 44, of the Twin Cities, was reunited with his dad and brother on February 27, 2023.

He was born on January 14, 1979 in Hastings, Minnesota to Tim and JoAnne (King) McDonald. He grew up in Hastings and graduated from Hastings High school.

Dale explored many areas in life from Boy Scouts where he earned the highest rank of Eagle Scout, serving mass growing up at St Joseph’s parish, to serving in the military for a short time. He loved his family more than anything and was so incredibly proud of his kids. He enjoyed playing pool, going bowling, working on cars, construction and tiling. Dale was a big fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and embraced all things Irish. Dale never stayed in one place for long, he was always on the go but felt most at home in the outdoors.

He struggled much of his life with addiction and faced his challenges through help from MN Teen Challenge, Metro Hope and Life Rebuilders. Through life's trials and tribulations, Dale had a strong faith in Jesus Christ and took every moment to share his faith with others. During his struggles he found a love of drawing, painting, and cooking as well as leading bible studies.

He is forever in the hearts of his mother, JoAnne McDonald; children, Aryana, Cameron and Katelyn; sister Jaci & Greg VanSchoonhoven; brother Tom McDonald; nephews Duncan and Gage McDonald; grandfather Dale D. McDonald and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Dale is reunited in his heavenly home with his father, Tim McDonald; brother Kevin McDonald, grandparents William & Theresa King and MaryAnne McDonald; uncles, Bill Halek and Bill King and cousin Mike King.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 pm Friday, March 3 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville, with visitation from 11-1pm at the church. Dale’s final resting place will be right beside his dad and brother in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. At the family’s request please wear green in remembrance of Dale’s love for the Irish!

James Ralph Baumann, age 73, passed away peacefully on February 18 after a 16 year battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Jim was born in New Ulm, Minnesota on December 20, 1949 to Lucy (Vetter) and Ralph Baumann. He was soon joined by siblings; Charles, Richard, and Jane. Jim grew up on his parents’ farm near Hanska, learning the value of hard work and a deep love for farming and the land. He graduated from New Ulm High School and Mankato State University with a degree in accounting. Jim and Judy met at MSU and married in Marshall on a hot day in July 1974.

For a time, Jim and Judy lived in Hastings and Jim drove to Minneapolis every day to work as an accountant, never forgetting his true passion for farming. In 1995, Jim and Judy realized their dream when they moved to their farm north of Miesville. Until the end, Jim was happiest talking about his plans for the spring, how the crops were looking, or the price of corn.

Jim is survived by his wife, Judy (Skaug) Baumann; children, Suzanne Baumann (Robert Morin) of White Bear Lake, Gina (Cody) Tusberg of Hastings, and Michael (Molly) Baumann of Sisters, Oregon. The lights of his life were his grandchildren, Stella (3) and August (1) Morin; Summer (10), Laine (8), Riggs (5), Crew (3), and Dawson (3) Tusberg; and Sawyer (8) and Bridger (6) Baumann.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2023 at 4:00 pm at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel, 3075 Vermillion Street in Hastings. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Miesville, where he will be intered.

Jim’s family is endlessly thankful for the many neurologists, nurses, and care staff who’ve supported us on this journey. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson Research (give.michaeljfox.org).

Rev. Father Leonard F. Siebenaler, age 89 of Hastings, passed away peacefully at Regina Medical Center on Monday evening, January 16, 2023.

Leonard Francis, the son of Mathias and Christine (Gores) Siebenaler, was born on December 3, 1933, at home in New Trier. Following his graduation from Nazareth Hall High School in 1951, Leonard attended Nazareth Hall College, and later entered The St. Paul Seminary where he was ordained in 1959. From that point forward, Father Leonard was blessed to work with many great parishes including: St. Ann's Catholic Church in North Minneapolis (1959-1964 & 1968-1971), St. Mary of the Lake in White Bear Lake (1964-1968), St. Paul Catholic Church in Zumbrota and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bellechester where he served as Pastor (1971-1974), St. Columba Catholic Church in St. Paul (1974-1981), Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in St. Louis Park (1981-1993), St. Michael Catholic Catholic Church in St. Michael (1993-2002), and in his retirement he happily assisted at St. Pius Catholic Church in Cannon Falls and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville. Outside of his vocation, Father Leonard enjoyed golfing, playing his classical guitar, and singing. He also loved cars, especially his Buicks over the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Kay Hoffman; and by his brothers-in-law, Jim Neisen and Norbert Hoffman.

Father Leonard is survived by his siblings, Rev. Father Martin Siebenaler, Rev. Father John Siebenaler, Therese Siebenaler, Donna Neisen, Edward (Theresa) Siebenaler, Raymond (Karen) Siebenaler, and Bernard M. (Joanie) Siebenaler; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 20, 2023, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Hastings, with Bishop Joseph A. Williams officiating. Interment will be held at the parish cemetery.

Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings, and from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Friday morning at church. A reception will also be held at church immediately following the service

Lois C. Bauer (Rother) age 96 of Hastings passed away December 20 at Mayo Methodist Hospital, Rochester.

Lois life was dedicated to the farm and spending time with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved watching and feedings birds, playing many card games with her card group, traveling, the red rover trips with her friends and enjoyed the YMCA non-swimming, swimming pool group. She spent many years during the winter months with family and friends in Mission, Texas and summer months at their cabin in Danbury, Wisconsin.

Preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Isadore "Fuzzy" Bauer; son, Randy Bauer; brothers, Leonard "Shorty" and Betty Rother, Edward, Donald, Raynard (MaryAnn), Charlie, Leroy "Jiggs," and Jim (Diane).

Survived by her loving son, Dell (Sharon) Bauer; grandchildren, Jodell (Jim) Caturia, Jay (Anna) Bauer, Dena (Sean) McGree, and Devon Bauer; step-grandson, Eric (Emily) Christiansen; step-granddaughter, Amy (Kyle) Dietman; great-grandchildren, Cole & Claire Caturia, Axton & Lenox Bauer, and Zoe & Ella McGree; step-great grandchildren, Kyla Severson, Lily & Mason Christiansen; sisters, Marlene (Larry) O'Neill & Sharon Tornes; sisters-in-law, Marilyn, Mary, and Kathy Rother; many nieces, nephews, other relatives & friends.

Linda Laine Alter passed away on November 7, 2022 at the age of 58 while surrounded by her family.

Linda was born on May 14th, 1964 to Terrance and Helene Tri. She was a graduate of Hastings High School, class of 1982. She married her late husband Scott Laine of Hermantown, MN in 1984. Scott and Linda raised 3 sons, Matthew, Aaron, and Eric.

On November 13, 1992, Linda married Brock (Donald) Alter of Mt. Pleasant, IA. They had 2 daughters, Lauren and Bailey. Together they raised their combined 7 children while living in Hastings, MN. Brock acted as Linda’s primary caregiver, loving companion, and duet partner.

All who knew Linda, knew what it meant to be loved. She considered everyone she met to be a friend. Linda loved her children and would take any opportunity to tell everyone how proud she was to be their mom. She loved to sing and shared her passion for music with her children and husband, Brock. Everyone knows that her favorite spot on a Friday night was at the American Legion for karaoke.

Linda was preceded in death by her late husband, Scott; her father, Terrance Tri; and son, Ryan Laine.

She is survived by her husband, Brock; mother, Helene Tri; her siblings, Kevin (Catherine) Tri, Amy (Daniel) Peltier, Julie (Brian) Sutter, and Carey (Jess) Tri; her children, Paul (DeeDee) Alter, Bernie (Maria) Alter, Matthew Laine, Aaron (Saskia) Laine, Eric Laine, Lauren Alter, Bailey (Matthew) Tschida; and her grandchildren, Tristan, Rafe, Shelby, Gavin, Brooks, Leah, and Bryson. She loved and cherished all of the time spent surrounded by her loved ones. She will be deeply missed by all.

Anita (Kimmes) Freiermuth, age 82, of Miesville, died peacefully at her home surrounded by family.

Anita, daughter of Michael and Lena (Marshall) Kimmes was born on March 21, 1940 in Red Wing MN.

Anita graduated from Hastings in 1958. On July 1, 1961 she married the love of her life, Bill Freiermuth at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville where she was still a dedicated member. Anita started working at the family feed mill in Miesville during high school. Anita also did bookkeeping for Don’s Milling and Niebur Oil. Anita was the City Clerk for the City of Miesville for over 40 years, she helped the city receive grants for improvements to the park and the fire department. Anita also worked for the Hastings High School as a student secretary and as a greeter for over 20 years.

Anita loved spending time with her daughters whether it be shopping, baking or taking their special road trips to Turtle Lake. Anita loved playing cards, playing bingo and spending time with family and friends. Anita lived for the summer months, it meant she could be outside in her beautiful flower gardens and watching her beloved Miesville Mudhens play baseball.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill of 55 years, her parents and her sister- in-law Sally Kimmes.

She is survived by her daughters, Denise (Don) Lawrence of Welch and Darcy (Mike) Nelson of Hager City, Wisconsin; her step grandchildren, Courtney (Mark) Brunner, Jeremy (Kayla) Nelson and Chad (Katie) Lawrence; 5 step great grandchildren; siblings, Donivan Kimmes, LeRoy (Rosie) Kimmes, Doug (Norma) Kimmes, Irma Peterson, and Charlotte Kimmes; her in-laws, Irma Freiermuth, Mary Ann Otto, Cindy Freiermuth and Jerry and Rosalie Rother; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville with Father Terry Beeson celebrating. Visitation will be held 4:00pm – 7:00pm Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at Starkson Funeral Home and one hour before the funeral on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at the church.

She was preceded in death by parents, Max and Eva (Weitzel) Hammerschmidt; siblings, Clea Dalton, Rita Sandkamp, Anna Holmstrom Flaherty, Joseph Hammerschmidt, Raymond Hammerschmidt, and Mathew Hammerschmidt; son, Glen Carlson; and by her grandson, Richard Rose.

She is survived by her husband Richard Carlson; children, Theresa (Jon) Eclov, Jim (Michele) Carlson, Dave Carlson, Eric (Amy) Carlson, Barb (Don) Musch, Maxine (Chris) Rose, and Rick (Deb) Carlson; daughter-in-law, Heather Carlson; 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and by many other relatives and friends.

Irma grew up in a big, loving family in Cottage Grove, MN. She attended St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School and St. Paul Park High School. In high school she enjoyed National Honor Society, FHA, the class play, and History Club. She graduated as Valedictorian from St. Paul Park High School in 1958. Following a blind double date with her sister in 1956, Irma started walking out with Richard Carlson, the love of her life. Her senior yearbook prophecy stated that “Irma Hammerschmidt finally got tired of her long name so she legally had it changed to Carlson.” Irma and Dick married on June 27, 1959. After graduating Irma worked for Erickson Oil Company and 3M in Cottage Grove. Irma and Dick raised their 8 children in Miesville, and rural Hastings in the house they built. Irma enjoyed sewing, reading, and bird-watching. Her joys were her children and grandchildren. She never learned how to swim, but she made sure all the kids had swimming lessons. Irma always made her home welcoming to the many family and friends who stopped by ALL THE TIME. The coffee was always hot and there were cookies in the cookie jar. As a blacksmith’s wife, Irma was an integral part of the Guild of Metalsmith’s support system, taking care of food and planning at events and conferences.

She will be missed by so many. She was a caring and loving person and we will always be grateful for how she enriched our lives.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2022, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Miesville, with Father Terry Beeson officiating. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery.

Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, and for one hour prior to Mass at church on Thursday morning, all at church.

Mary Ann Fox, age 71 of Hastings, died on Monday, May 9, 2022 at Mayo Clinic Hospital - Rochester, St. Mary’s Campus.

Mary Ann was born on July 13, 1950 in Stanley, WI, the daughter of Thomas and Genevieve (Wisniewski) Wisniewski. She grew up in Junction, WI and later graduated from high school in Stanley, WI.

She married Leonard J. Fox on September 4, 1971 in Stanley, WI and they made their home in Hastings. She worked for 35+ years at Smead Manufacturing in Hastings until her retirement.

Mary Ann will be remembered for her spiritual being. She relished and found comfort in reading the bible every day.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Leonard; daughter, Carrie (Jeff) King of Cannon Falls; grandchildren, Dylan, Madysen and Colten King; brothers, Fred “Fritz” Wisnewski of Stanley, WI and Bernard (Caroline) Wisniewski of Prescott, WI; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Linus (Pam) Fox and August (Diane) Fox, all of Hastings; and nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2022 at 10:30 am, with visitation from 9:30-10:30 am, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 23955 Nicolai Ave, Miesville. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Michael "Mike" McGrath, age 75 of Hastings, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Friday morning, April 1, 2022.

Michael James, the son of Dennis and Helen (Gessner) McGrath, was born on August 1, 1946, in Hastings. Following his graduation from Hastings High School with the class of 1964, Mike was united in marriage to Kathleen "Kay" Bauer on October 9, 1965, at Church of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville. Mike was a longtime ironworker with Local 512 and was able to participate in many large projects including: IDS Tower, Norwest Bank, and the Metrodome prior to his retirement following twenty five years of employment. However, Mike's true passion was farming until his health no longer allowed him to following his last harvest in 2021. Mike's legacy of being a hard worker will be carried out through his sons as they continue farming the land their dad loved. Outside of work and farming, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, stock car racing in his younger years, deer hunting, and simply enjoyed being outdoors no matter what the weather was. He was an avid Nascar fan and a longtime member of Church of St. Joseph in Miesville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Kody McGrath; sister-in-law, Cindy Hood; and by his brothers-in-law, Steve Swanson and Fred Bauer.

Father Marvin J. Klaers, age 96 of Hampton, died peacefully at home on Saturday evening, March 12, 2022.

Marvin Jerome, the son of Bernard and Regina (Otto) Klaers, was born on the family farm in Loretto at 7:15 a.m. on September 5, 1925. From a young age, Marvin knew he always wanted to be a priest. Through many difficult times of growing up during the depression, Marvin graduated from Nazareth Hall and then enrolled in seminary school to live out hi s vocation.

Following his Ordination in 1950, Father Klaers was first assigned as Assistant Priest at St. Mark in Shakopee. In the following years he served as Pastor at St. Mathias in Hampton, St. Thomas the Apostle in St. Paul, and St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Paul. In 1976, Father Klaers was assigned as Pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Ch urch in New Trier as well as Church of St. Joseph in Miesville prior to retiring in 2002.

Even in retirement, Father Klaers continued to serve many communities in the southern part of the Archdiocese.

Father Klaers enjoyed being outdoors and especially going for many walks. He loved his hometown of Loretto and was very proud of his heritage, especially the cemetery that he will be laid to rest at as it was initially part of the family farm. Father Klaers was dedicated to the historic genealogy information of his family and enjoyed writing about the details he discovered.

He w as preceded in death by his parents and by his brothers, Clarence, LeRoy, and Theodore.

Father Klaers is survived by his sister, Annella Ahles; nieces and nephews, Peggy, Andy, Timothy, Joel, Howard, Patty, and Michael; longtime caretaker and friend, Patti (John) Kocur; and by many friends from the parishes he served over the years.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at Church of St. Joseph in Miesville, with Archbishop Bernard Hebda and Bishop Joseph Williams officiating. Interment will be held at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Loretto, Minnesota.

Visita tion will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening, March 21, 2022, at Church of St. Joseph in Miesville, with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. There will not be a public reviewal at church on Tuesday.

Ronald G. "Ron" Vitek, age 83 of Welch, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Friday morning, February 25, 2022.

Ronald G. Sr., the son of Frank and Loretta (Parnell) Vitek, was born on April 24, 1938, in St. Paul. After moving to Newport, Ron attended St. Paul Park High School prior to serving his country in the United States Air Force. Following his Honorable Discharge, Ron was united in marriage to Marlene Heschke on July 11, 1959, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Hastings. Over the years, Ron worked at Armour & Co. for twenty-five years prior to owning The Country Pump with Marlene for fifteen years. After retiring, Ron enjoyed working at Gopher Hills Golf Course for the last ten years. In his early years, he enjoyed bowling and much against his own words, Ron later found a love of golfing with his friends and family. He enjoyed deer hunting and traveling over the last twenty years, especially to Cozumel, Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his brother, Lawrence on February 9, 2021.

Ron is survived by his wife, Marlene; children, Deborah (Al) Hensley, Ronald G. Vitek Jr., and Lori (Mike) Erickson; grandchildren, Michael Erickson, Andrew Erickson, Matthew Vitek, and Mitchell (Nicole) Vitek; five great granddaughters and one great grandson on the way; sister-in-law, Joyce Vitek; and by many other relatives and friends.

Roger J. Kimmes, age 79, of rural Hastings, died Friday, January 7, 2022. Roger Joseph was born February 15, 1942 in Hastings, MN to Sylvester and Rosella (Rother) Kimmes. He was married on September 3, 1962, to Mary Jane (Hernlem) at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Wing. Roger was a life-long farmer. He began farming with his dad, and later on with his own sons. He was a board member of the Miesville Mudhens from 1978 to 2001. In July of 2015, he was inducted into the Mudhens' Hall of Fame. Roger and Mary enjoyed traveling, and took many trips together in their younger years.

Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; parents, and sister, Mary Ann Dahlke.

Roger is survived by his sons, Roger Jr. "Fuzzy" (Shayle) Kimmes, Dan (Linda) Kimmes and Randy (Jenny) Kimmes; grandchildren, Dustin, Lily, Hunter, Andrew (Shannon), Danielle, Alexa and Caleb; sisters, Sylvia (Steve) Bauer and Gina (Jim) Reinardy; also by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Catherine A. (Deprey) Huisman

Catherine Ann Huisman, age 84 of Red Wing, died on Monday morning, January 10, 2022 at her daughter's home in Hampton.

Catherine was born the youngest of ten children to Joseph and Euphrasia (Kaster) Deprey on November 17, 1937 in Bellevue, WI. She worked at home, raising six children. Once they were grown, she worked various jobs in the communities she lived.

A devout Catholic, Catherine was active at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville. She was known for her beautiful floral gardens that were a large part of her yard. You could often find her working in the garden and sharing plants with others.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Dewight Reck; and siblings, Veronica Gnadt, Joseph and John Deprey, and Phyllis Deprey.

She is survived by her children, Tom (Leandra) of Stacy, John (Claire) of Burnsville, Mary Reck of Hampton, Ann (James) Kittelsen of Stacy, Eileen (Keith) Niehaus of Clarksville, IA, and Joe (Sandra) Huisman of Broomfield, CO; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; 5 siblings, Bernard (Irene) Deprey, Ann Deprey, Joan Hogan, Mary Rose Deprey, and Ceil Deprey; and many nieces and nephews.

A Latin Requiem Mass will be held on Friday, January 14 at 10:30 a.m., with visitation from 9:30-10:30 am, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville, with Fr. Cassian DiRocco celebrating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Robert ”Bob” Othmar Fox, age 65, passed away suddenly on Sunday, December 12, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Mary’s Campus in Rochester, MN. Bob was born on Sept. 12, 1956 in Red Wing, the son of Othmar and Betty (Jensen) Fox.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Julie (Brotzler) Fox; his son Justin, daughter Aimee (Tony) Flom, son Ryan (Madisen); granddaughters Aubrey and Madi; brothers Jim (Susan), Ray (Shawn), and Marty (Sarah); sister-in-law Debbie Fox; many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews, and beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Othmar and Betty, daughter Natalie, and brothers Albert and Michael.

Bob was a third-generation farmer in Miesville. He greatly loved and appreciated the land. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and time spent at his home away from home, his camper in Cumberland, and his get-away time in Florida. Bob had a great sense of humor, often telling stories while gathered around a campfire at the lake. He was a favorite of the many children in his life – quick to tell a joke or help them cast out a fishing line. Bob had the gift of hospitality and people were quick to gather with him, and slow to leave.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Miesville Fire Department would be greatly appreciated.

Visitation will be on Friday, December 17, from 4-7 pm, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 23955 Nicolai Ave, Miesville, MN 55033. There will be a rosary service at 7 pm. The funeral mass will be on Sat. December 18, at 11 am, also at St. Joseph’s. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the time of the service. Mary R. McAlpine, age 89 of Woodbury and formerly of Hastings, died peacefully at St. Therese of Woodbury on Saturday morning, November 20, 2021.

Mary Rose, the daughter of George and Edith (Walsh) Shields, was born on March 24, 1932, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Following her graduation from Humboldt High School with the class of 1950, Mary was united in marriage to Mason Murch Jr., and he preceded her in death in 1980. Mary later married Robert McAlpine in 1983, and he also preceded her in death in 1996.

In her earlier years, Mary worked as a bookkeeper and had the ability and skill to work with and remember numbers. While she was married to Mason, they owned and operated Kings Place in Miesville from 1974 to 1982. After marrying Bob, Mary enjoyed hosting many gatherings and parties at their farm in rural Hastings. She eventually sold the farm and built a townhome on Carleton Drive where she cherished the many friendships in the neighborhood. She also enjoyed her weekly round of golf, lunch, and happy hour with her country club ladies, dancing with Bob, and traveling to visit family and friends, and especially enjoyed traveling to Naples, Florida, with her best friend Annie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and by four siblings.

Mary is survived by her children, Stephen (Gail Gongoll-Murch) Murch and Cynthia (Peter) Krech; grandchildren, Jason Krech and Taylor Krech; step daughter, Mindi (Mike) Nielsen; step grandson, Rich Roman Jr.; and by many other relatives and friends.

Ethel J. Reuter, age 95 of Hastings, passed away at home with family by her side, November 14, 2021.

Ethel Reuter, the daughter of Robert and Helen Williamson, was born June 25, 1926 in Hastings, MN. She died peacefully at the age of 95 in her home, surrounded by her family.

Ethel graduated from Hastings High School as Valedictorian in 1945. Following graduation, she attended business school in Minneapolis and worked as a bookkeeper for a sporting goods store. On May 10, 1951, she was united in marriage to William N Reuter at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Miesville, MN. Together they raised 8 children at their current homestead.

Ethel enjoyed playing the clarinet and playing cards (especially when she was dealt good hands). She enjoyed playing Scrabble with her grandchildren, which she taught them with competitive humor. She loved to crochet and taught her grandchildren patience and love while doing it. She loved crossword puzzles and word finds, and riding her bike, most days riding over 10 miles. By the time she was 90, she rode over 10,000 miles on a one speed bicycle, wearing out many parts of that one bike, but she kept it going. She logged fewer miles after that, until at the age of 93 she quit riding. She and Bill loved to go dancing and listening to Old Time music. Besides her hobbies, she gardened and helped on the farm, and had a small business of raising chickens and selling eggs which enabled her to meet all sorts of people, many becoming loyal friends.

She was a devoted Catholic and said daily rosary. She was a long-time member of St Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Hastings, MN, but she also attended St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Miesville, MN.

Ethel is preceded in death by her husband, William; son, Edward; and siblings, Florence, Donald, Harold and Edna.

She is survived by her children, Pete (Anne) Reuter, Helen Haviland (Mike Sutherland), Virginia Reuter, Carl (Sharon) Reuter, Shirley Reuter, Matt (Sheila) Reuter and Dennis Reuter (Marsha Parlow); grandchildren; great grandchildren; and her brother, Paul Williamson.

Raynard Norbert Rother, age 90 of Welch, died Sunday, November 7, 2021, at Deer Crest Assisted Living. He was born May 6, 1931, in New Trier, to Edward and Cecelia (Schaffer) Rother. He attended school at St. Mary’s in New Trier and then started farming with his family, which would become his lifelong career. On November 22, 1952 he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Dalaska at St. John’s The Baptist in Vermillion. Together they had a farm in Welch, where they raised their eight children, who all helped out on the farm and at home. Raynard stayed active in his younger years, snowmobiling, bowling and fishing. He enjoyed his card club and was always up for a game of euchre, crazy 8’s or 500. He had a sweet tooth for ice cream and sweet spot for kids and babies and could be known to tease them once in a while. Raynard will be remembered for always having a smile on his face and you could often find him in Welch enjoying a hot breakfast or at King’s in Miesville, visiting and catching up with his neighborhood friends, while sipping on a whiskey water every now and then. He was a long-time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville where he was a former Trustee.

Survivors include his children, Duane (Pat) of Welch, Bruce “Steve” (Gin) of Welch, Jeff (Peg) of Hastings, Craig (Lori) of Red Wing, Diana (Randy) Williamson of Red Wing, Laurie (Gene) Stoffel of Miesville, Doug (Julia) of Welch, Joyce (Jason) Hart of Red Wing; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lois Bauer of Hastings, Marlene (Larry) O’Neil of Byron, Sharon Tornes of Woodbury. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Ann; great-granddaughter, Marley; brothers, Leonard, Donald, Edward, Charles, LeRoy, and James.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 15, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville with Father James Notebaart officiating. Burial will take place at the church cemetery. Linus J. Meisch, age 98, of Green Valley, Arizona and formerly of Woodbury, Minnesota, died peacefully on Friday evening, June 18, 2021.

Lin, as he was known, was born on May 31, 1923, in Miesville to Peter and Catherine (Ludwig) Meisch. As a young boy, he spent time in Hastings, Cannon Falls, and Miesville where his family owned the General Store, now the historic Kings Place. Linus graduated from Cannon Falls High School. He was drafted into service in WWll and proudly served in the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific. After his discharge, he used the GI bill to complete a bachelor of science degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he met his future bride Mary Patricia Kane. They married on June 21, 1952 in Mary’s hometown of Bloomington, Illinois. During the early years of his career, Lin and Mary lived in Colorado and New Mexico where Lin worked for the Bureau of Mines and the Army Corps of Engineers building roads and tunnels. As a young family, they moved back to West St. Paul where they raised their five children. Lin started his own firm, L J Meisch and Associates, where his work included structural designs for the first skyways in the twin cities, the Seattle World’s Fair pavilion and the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. Lin and Mary moved to Woodbury in 1992 prior to retiring in Arizona in 2010. Lin was a dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed boating on the St. Croix and Mississippi rivers, traveling to the National Parks throughout the western United States, golfing, and hiking with his family. Two of his favorite spots were Afton State Park and Madera Canyon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mary; siblings Mary, Cletus, and Raphael; and son-in-law John Durant Jr.

Linus is survived by his children, Mary (Matt) Powell, Diane Durant, Peter (Susan) Meisch, Paul (Margaret) Meisch, and George Meisch; grandchildren, Kate (Evan), Anna, Eleanor, Bridget, John, Sarah (Savy), Patrick, Ryan, Cristina, and Charles; one great grandson, Emmett.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville, Minnesota, with Father Terry Beeson officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Family and friends are cordially invited to the Mass and a luncheon immediately following the graveside service at the church on Saturday.

On the sunny morning of March 8, 2021, James “Jim” Weber, age 85, passed away peacefully in his home. Jim was born on June 8th, 1935 in Hastings to John and Jeanette Weber. He grew up with his siblings on their farm in Miesville, MN. Jim and his twin brother, Jack were decorated wrestlers while in high school. After graduation, Jim enlisted in the Army as a clerk. He traveled Europe while in the service and returned home to be a full-time carpenter and farmer.

In 1957, he married Viola Peine and they had four wonderful children. Jim and Vi raised their children on their farm in Miesville, MN. Jim enjoyed traveling out west to hunt antelope and elk. After losing Vi to a brain tumor, Jim reunited with a high school classmate Janice Baldwin and the two married in 2000. Jim and Jan enjoyed their retired years in Hastings and traveling to Lake Havasu. Jim’s life was full of wonderful memories with his family. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren watching them grow. Family was always the most important to Jim. Jim was able to spend his last days surrounded by his family.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife, Viola; brothers, Bernard Weber and Jerry Weber; sister, Alberta Horsch; and twin brother, John "Jack" Weber. He is survived by his loving wife, Jan; sisters, Ann McGree and Harriet Weiderholt; sisters in law, Marion and Marlys Weber; children, Kim (Dennis) Main, Kevin (Maureen) Weber, Dean (Kim) Weber, Rodney (Molly) Weber, Bryce (Jean) Baldwin, Bill (Anita) Baldwin; grandchildren, Wendy, Jeremy, Michael, Adam, James, Nicole, Laura Rose, Justin, Brooke, Rachel, Matthew, Angie and Justin and many great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 12, 2021 at 2:00 PM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Miesville. A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2021 from 4:00-8:00 PM at church in Miesville and one hour prior to mass on Friday. Interment, St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Miesville.

Mark Franklin, the son of Edmund and Caroline (Kipfer) Capesius, was born on July 16, 1944, in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Following his graduation from Algona High School with the class of 1962, Mark was drafted into the United States Army where he was stationed at Fort Detrick, Maryland, as an Army Medic. Following his honorable discharge, he was united in marriage to Dianne White on April 18, 1970, in Hibbing, Minnesota. Mark was a longtime employee of Northwest Airlines and retired in 2007 after forty-three years of service. Mark enjoyed working on his hobby farm, hunting, fishing, his four horses and two rat terriers. Most of all, he was proud of his gardens and the fresh vegetables, especially his sweet corn and potatoes, that he sold at their vegetable stand. Rest In Peace boo, see you on the other side. Forever missed, never forgotten. Heaven has acquired a caring and gentle soul.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mark is survived by his wife of fifty-years, Dianne "Dee"; daughter, Ashley; brother, Chuck (Betty) Capesius; sisters, Rachel (Jim) Malone, Colette Hunsucker, and Gwen (Jeff) Casperson; and many other relatives and friends.

Jack Louis Friesen, infant son of Savannah (Yurick) and Michael Friesen died on Friday, April 3, 2020 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester. He was born on Thursday, April 2, 2020 at Methodist Hospital. Jack is survived by his parents of Goodhue; one brother, Oden; maternal grandparents, Dan and Sarah Yurick; paternal grandparents, Ron and Kara Friesen; maternal great grandparents, Steve and Janet Yurick and Bob and Liz Maser; paternal great grandparents, Aveline Zibble and Elaine and Butch Lee along with many cousins, aunts and uncles. Edith M. Paradis, age 90 of Hampton, died peacefully at home on Thursday afternoon, February 13, 2020.

Edith Mabel, the daughter of Raymond and Nellie Giddings, was born on June 25, 1929, in Springfield, Vermont. Following her graduation from high school, she was united in marriage to Ronald Paradis in 1947. They were blessed with four children and many wonderful memories prior to his passing. Edith was a dedicated homemaker, and was always willing to help in any way she could.

She was preceded by her parents; husband, Ronald; daughter, Mary; and by daughters-in-law, Sandy and Pawn.

Edith is survived by her children, Richard Paradis, Bill Paradis, and John Wesley (Anne) Paradis; special grandson, Jonathan and many other grandchildren and great grandchildren; the extended Bourbeau Family; brother, Henry Giddings; and by other relatives and friends.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville. Interment will be held at the parish cemetery.

Tegan Paul the son of Chad and Tracey (Niebur) Johnson, was born on March 14, 2007, in Minneapolis. Tegan attended grade school at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Vermillion as well as Pinecrest Elementary, and was currently enrolled as a seventh grader at Hastings Middle School. Tegan loved life and simply lived it to the fullest. He enjoyed racing dirt bikes, playing baseball in Miesville, hanging out with his friends, watching movies, collecting various things from the outdoors, water skiing and downhill skiing. Tegan especially enjoyed pheasant hunting with his dad and grandpa in South Dakota, spending time at the family cabin up north, and dirt biking with his brothers and friends. Most of all, Tegan truly loved the time spent with family and cherished the many traditions they established.

He was preceded in death by his grandpa, Ronald "Ron" Johnson.

Tegan is survived by his loving parents, Chad and Tracey Johnson; brothers and best friends, Brecken and Emmett; grandparents, Paul and Susan Niebur and Linda Johnson; aunts and uncles, Todd and Kelley Johnson, Jaime and Jason Youngquist, and Rodney and Jessy Niebur; his cousins whom he loved dearly, Alex Johnson, Alissa Johnson, Drue Niebur, Leo Youngquist, Addy Youngquist, McKenna Youngquist, and Emma Johnson; and by many other dear family members and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 18, 2020, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville, with Father Terry Beeson officiating. Private family interment will take place at the parish cemetery.

Marta Blanca Soler, age 95, of Cannon Falls, and formerly of Florida, died Sunday, January 5, 2020 at her home.

Marta was born on October 4, 1924 in Trinidad, Cuba, the daughter of Manuel Diaz and Josefa (Fornias) Diaz. She grew up there and became an elementary school teacher after graduating from college. On December 26, 1948, Marta was united in marriage to Guillermo Soler in Trinidad. The couple, along with their two daughters, made their way to the United States in March of 1962. They settled first in Miami and then moved to West Palm Beach where they lived for many years. Marta was a very talented seamstress who worked in the fashion industry in Florida. In 2015 they moved to Cannon Falls to be cared for by their daughter. Her husband Guillermo died in 2015.

Marta was an avid reader and enjoyed entertaining their many friends, as well as cooking gourmet foods. She loved poetry and history, especially Cuban History. She was enthusiastic about life, and was known as a witty, fast-thinking Renaissance woman.

Survivors include her children Blanca Soler of Portland, OR, and Marta Garbarino (Joe) of Cannon Falls; grandchildren Havana Soler, Jessica Garbarino, Rebecca (Garbarino) Schoephoerster, Julia Garbarino, Katherine (Garbarino) Behnke, Leo Garbarino, Alex Garbarino, and Rachel Garbarino; and eight great-grandchildren. Marta was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Guillermo.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 from 6 pm – 8 pm at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 23955 Nicolai Ave, Miesville, MN 55033. A Latin Requiem Mass will be at 11:00 am Wednesday, January 8, also at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. There will be a visitation from 10-11 am preceding the service at the church. Interment will be in the church cemetery immediately following the service. Lundberg Funeral Home of Cannon Falls is assisting the family.

Michael E. Alm died Wednesday, December 11 at home. A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, December 20 at 11:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville, with a visitation from 9 - 11 am. Luncheon will immediately follow Mass at St. Joseph in the Parish Hall.

Michael was the youngest son of Ernest and Clara (Laska) Alm. He was born on August 12, 1950 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He lived on a farm in Finlayson, Minnesota, graduating from Finlayson High. His favorite sport in high school was basketball. Upon graduation, Mike joined the 49’ers Heavy Equipment Union and married his high school sweetheart. Mike continued in Heavy Equipment finding himself working in several parts of the state, and also found himself eating in a different place each time. After 12 years of marriage, he found himself at a local restaurant in Apple Valley where he met Shirley. Several months later he pursued her.

Years later, in 1987 Shirley and Mike were married and blessed in their Catholic Faith. Shirley Linehan Gagnon also had four children: Vicki Wagner, Michelle Gagnon, Thomas Gagnon and Gary Gagnon (deceased). After living in Bloomington, they moved to Hastings in 1995.

Mike entered into a new profession of supplying natural stone to retailers in a five state area. His company was called Mac Natural Stone, ending up with a nickname of “Rocky”. After retirement from the business world, Mike decided to try his hand at Blacksmithing. He made crosses for several people, until his hand could no longer hold a hammer. He so enjoyed the company of his many friends in Blacksmithing and attended distant Blacksmith conventions. He was always interested in meeting new people. One of Mike’s other loves, was his Wyoming hunting trips with a great bunch of guys. Their experiences are endless. The fun for Shirley was helping to prepare the venison. His greatest love was his Church, his wife of 32 years and their children, and 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Children: Nathan (Charyl) Alm, Heather (Jon) Maack, Jenna (Tab) Alm, Lukas Alm (deceased), Vicki Wagner, Michelle Gagnon, Thomas (Lynn) Gagnon, and Gary Gagnon (deceased).

Grandchildren: Katlynn, Gabrielle, Nicole (Dane), Anthony, Kyle, Jonah, Britany (Theran), Vanessa, Jedidiah, Daunite, and Chelsie.

Great grandchildren: Dax, Jace, Brayden, Carson, Gibson and Rosalyn. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Private internment will be at St. Joseph Parish Cemetery at a later date.

Dennis C. Mainz, age 68 of Hastings, died on Sunday evening, December 1, 2019, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul following a recent farm accident.

Dennis Carl, the son of John and Esther (Hanson) Mainz, was born on August 27, 1951, in Hastings. Following his graduation from Hastings High School, Dennis continued his education in Agriculture at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree. Dennis returned home to the family farm and continued to farm the land that has been in his family for over a century. He enjoyed playing cards, especially Euchere, going to auctions, riding motorcycle, and taking trips to Treasure Island. Dennis also enjoyed volunteering for St. Joseph Catholic Church at Little Log House every year and was a dedicated blood donor with Red Cross.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dennis is survived by his children, Clinton Mainz, Aaron Mainz, and Heather Mainz; grandson, Liam Mainz; siblings, Michael Mainz, Ken (Roxanne) Mainz, and Linda (Woody) Woodstrom; and by many other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 7, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville, with Father Terry Beeson officiating. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery.

Obituary for Harriet Wilhelmina Schammel Harriet Wilhelmina Schammel, 93, of Red Wing, died on Sunday, September 22, 2019, at her home at Valentine’s Assisted Living. She was born in Welch on August 16, 1926, to Alvin and Caroline (Schaffer) Olson. She graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1944 and attended teacher’s training. For a couple years, she taught rural school near Welch. She was united in marriage to Michael Schammel on February 5, 1951, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville. She worked for several years at First State Bank and did bookwork for the family business, Schammel Oil Company. Harriet was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville. She enjoyed her weekly coffee group on Tuesday mornings for 44 years. Harriet was fond of her homemaker’s group, she enjoyed crafts, hardinger, tatting, and crocheting. She also had a talent of playing piano by ear. She is survived by her three children, Jeanne (Steven) Lindstrom of Arkansaw, WI, George (Patricia) Schammel of Red Wing, and James (Jeanne) Schammel of Red Wing; six grandchildren, Sam, Ben, Christina, Jordan, Blake, and Nicole; four step-grandsons and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael; her parents, Alvin and Caroline; brothers, Conrad, Godfrey, Eugene, and Paul; sisters, Helen (Freeman) Daley and Frances (Wyman) Kilgore and granddaughter, Theresa Lindstrom. Mass of Resurrection will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 26, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville, with Father Terry Beeson presiding. Richard "Dick" Stark, age 73 of Hastings, died peacefully at home following an extended illness on Monday evening, July 8, 2019.

Richard Donald, the son of William B. Sr. and Elvira M. (Hoffman) Stark, was born on August 12, 1945, in Hastings, Minnesota. Following his graduation from Hastings High School with the class of 1963, Dick continued his education at University of Wisconsin ~ River Falls. Dick worked at Central Natural Gas Company for a brief time, Red Owl Grocery for ten years, and eventually began working for the FAA Flight Service. Throughout his career, Dick worked at Minneapolis Flight Service, Redwood Falls Flight Service, and Princeton Flight Service where he retired in 2001 as Flight Service Manager. Dick loved boating, motorcycles, cars, and target shooting at the gun club. He will always be remembered as the Superman of our family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his brother-in-law, Thomas Pechacek.

Dick is survived by his siblings, John W. (Karen) Stark, Robert Stark, William B. Jr. (Debbie) Stark, Thomas C. (Julie) Stark, Kenneth R. Stark, Sharon D. (Richard) McInnis, and Judy D. (Herbert Jr.) Steinke; and by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Gary Patrick Neubauer age 64 of Hastings, MN passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on July 3rd 2019.

Gary was born to James and Eleanor (Whalen) Neubauer on April 12, 1955 in Wells, MN. He worked in the agriculture industry for 41 years and was currently employed by Frontier Ag & Turf in Cannon Falls, MN. He is a Retired Volunteer Fireman with the Miesville Fire Department and a previous member of the Miesville Lions Club.

Gary enjoyed and loved hunting, camping, snowmobiling, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a selfless man who was always willing to lend a helping hand. Gary was a humble mentor to many, always teaching others and sharing his vast knowledge. He was very dependable, supportive and understanding and extremely committed to his family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Eleanor Neubauer; and father-in-law, Robert Friesen.

He is deeply loved and missed by his wife, Diane; children, Cory (Eve) Friesen, Cody Chytracek, and Katelyn (significant other, Mitch); grandchildren, Kyle, Kayla and grandbaby due in October; siblings, Richard (Suzanne), Kathy (Lowell) Willock, Jane (Dick) Callahan, Thomas (Carol), and Mary (Chuck) Schulenberg; mother-in-law, Elaine (Butch) Lee; brother-in-law, Ron (Kara) Friesen; sister-in-law, Bobbi (Jeff) Kieffer; and many nieces and nephews.

Paul Robert Olson, 97 of Welch, died Friday, May 17, 2019 at St Crispin Living Community in Red Wing, MN, where he’d lived since April 2018. Paul was born September 29th, 1921 at the farm home of his parents, Alvin and Caroline (Schaffer) Olson. He proceeded to live in that house for over 93 years.

Paul attended country school in Welch, then went through eighth grade at St. Joseph Catholic School in Red Wing. On June 9th, 1945 he married Bernice Treichler of Welch at St. Joseph Church in Red Wing. He farmed until 1987, as well as working part-time for the Postal Service and Welch Village Ski Area. Paul enjoyed playing cards, bird watching, mowing lawn, crossword puzzles and going to Mass. At the time of his death, he was the oldest life-long parishioner at St. Joseph Church in Miesville.

Paul Robert Olson is survived by three daughters, Bonnie (Carl) Granquist of Shoreline, WA, Paulette (John) Sutherland of Casper, WY, and Judy (Rocky) Ramboldt of Goodhue, MN; eight grandchildren, Claire Granquist, Carl (Courtney Pearson) Granquist, all of Shoreline, WA, Erin Una Olson (Brad Bernstein) of Austin, TX, Benjamin (Stephanie) Billings of San Mateo, CA, Rebekah (Jeff) Stout of Jamaica Plain, MA, Hannah (Angel) Acosta of Casper, WY, Anna (Emilia) Ramboldt of Linghem, Sweden, and Laura Ramboldt of Goodhue; seven great grandchildren, Uma and Kaveen Chainani, Quinntin Bernstein, Zinnia and Kye Acosta, Phoebe Stout, and Walter Ramboldt; one sister, Harriet Schammel of Red Wing; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice, on March 5, 2011; three brothers, Conrad, Godfrey, and Eugene; and two sisters, Helen Daley and Frances Kilgore.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 PM on Thursday, May 23 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville. Funeral Mass will be offered by Fr. Terry Beeson at 11 AM on Friday, May 24, with visitation for one hour prior to Mass. Interment is in the Church cemetery.

Virginia McGrath, 83, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday April 14, 2019.

Virginia Mae was born on May 9, 1935 to Joseph and Evelyn (Schultz) Thome in Plainview, MN. She was the second of four daughters- the redhead of the bunch. Virginia grew up on a farm outside of Plainview and was lucky enough to be the chosen helper on the farm by her dad. Virginia logged more hours than she'd care to count on a Farmall Model B. Growing up, Virginia loved to take care of and ride her prized horse, Stormy, which she paid for herself. Virginia was born stubborn, once running home from country school because she was bored. She was a graduate of St. Felix of Wabasha class of 1953. On January 11, 1954 she married the love of her life and next door neighbor, Mathew McGrath, in St. Louis, MO. After getting married, Matt and Virginia moved to Denver, Colorado where Matt was a gas station attendant. Unable to find decent work, Matt and Virginia decided to move to northern Minnesota where Matt could find work with the DNR planting trees. However, that morning Matt had been offered a job at the tire factory but the decision to move back to Minnesota was made by flipping a coin. Back in Minnesota, Matt was able to find work at the Flour Mill in Hastings. Virginia was a homemaker on their 80 acre farm in Ravenna Township. After raising five children in a house with no indoor plumbing, Matt and Virginia built a new house on that property in 1961 and had two more children. In 1969 Matt and Virginia entered into the business of raising chickens. Each day for many years, Virginia would pick eggs in a house of 10,000 birds. Later in life, Virginia enjoyed taking day trips throughout southern Minnesota, visiting with family and friends, watching her soap operas, baking, tending gardens, and reading every magazine and cookbook she could get her hands on. Above all, Virginia was a very generous and caring person to many charities and missions.

Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, husband Mathew, daughter Teresa, son-in-law Joe Jilk, and many brothers and sisters in law.

Virginia is survived by her children Cindy (Bruce) Manovich, Jean Jilk, Kevin (Roxanne) McGrath, Joyce (Terry) Siepelmeyer, Tim (Cat) McGrath, and Terry (Brenda) McGrath. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren: Dusty, Weston, Randy, Leah, Shane, Cassie, Shannon, Elizabeth, Alex, Nick, and Sarah, 10 Great-Grandchildren, dozens of nieces and nephews and countless friends and neighbors, and three sisters: Alice Evers, Margaret Sylvester, and Joan Prebe.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville, with Father Terry Beeson officiating. Immediately following the Mass a luncheon will be served at church, and interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Cemetery in Rural Kellogg, MN.

Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the new location of Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel, 3075 Vermillion Street, in Hastings, and for one hour prior to the Mass at church on Wednesday morning.

Florence Marie (Marty) Kocur, born February 16, 1928 in St. Paul, MN, died peacefully at home surrounded by her children March 5, 2019, at 8:15 a.m.

Florence attended St. Paul Cathedral Grade School and Monroe High School, graduating class 1946, growing up on West 7th Street. She married Joseph Kocur July 15, 1950, and were married 31 years. Joseph died October 15, 1981.

Florence was a devoted homemaker, raising 5 children: Pamela (Kris) Jenson, Susan (Randy) Wedrickas, John (Patti) Kocur, Linda Kocur and Joseph (Terry) Kocur. She is also survived by her 9 loving grandchildren: Andrew (Lisa) Jenson, Mike (Beth) Jenson, David (Kelsey) Jenson, Joseph (Samantha) Jenson, Paul (Whitney) Jenson, Ryan (Clare) Wedrickas, Abby Wedrickas, Jennifer and Angela Voth. She has 13 great-grandchildren, Josephine, Johnathan, Jaclyn, Jakob, Jeffrey, Luke, Adam, Liam, Piper, Kendall, Hailey, Belle, Everell and baby (all Jensons); 1 brother, Richard Marty and many nieces and nephews.

Florence was preceded in death by parents Albert and Marie (Grimsrud) Marty, brother Harold (Rosemary) Marty, Audrey Marty and great-granddaughter Aurora Jenson.

After living in the St. Paul area for 20 years, Joseph and Florence moved to a farm in Welch in 1970. She was an active parishioner and a member of the Rosary Society at St. Joseph’s Church in Miesville. She enjoyed spending time, baking and cooking for her family and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also loved traveling, relished her time with friends and volunteered with DARTS. Florence was always proud to be a St. Paul girl.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville, with Father Terry Beeson officiating. Interment will immediately follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Miesville.

Visitation will be held at church from 9:00 am – 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning.

Arrangements are being completed by Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings.

Mary J. Kimmes, age 76, of rural Hastings, died Tuesday, February 26, 2019 in Hastings.

Mary Jane Hernlem was born January 8, 1943 in Red Wing, Mn to Arthur and Marion (Van Decar) Hernlem. She was married on September 3, 1962, to Roger Kimmes at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Wing. She was a homemaker and they raised 3 sons, Roger Jr., Randy and Dan.

Mary was a woman of faith, she loved to travel with friends and cooking for her family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister Judy Lawrence.

Mary is survived by her husband Roger, her sons Roger Jr. “Fuzzy” (Shayle) Kimmes, Randy (Jenny) Kimmes and Dan (Linda) Kimmes; 7 grandchildren; Dustin, Lily, Hunter, Andrew, Danielle, Alexa and Caleb; sisters Karen (Rich) Meier, Pat Schroeder, Janet Tomhave and Peggy McNabb; sisters in law Egina (Jim) Reinardy and Sylvia (Steve) Bauer; also by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

The Funeral Mass, officiated by Father Terry Beeson, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville. A visitation will be held 2 hours prior to the funeral from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.

Thanks to all that came from near and far to hear Fr Altier talk about the differences between the Ordinary and Extraordinary Form of Mass. It was a great day with a chance to attend the Extraordinary Form of Mass on the feast day of St. Mathias. After the afternoon talk on "Examination of Conscience", all had the opportunity to attend confession. Thank you Fr Barsness and Fr Kasel for taking time out of your day to hear confessions.

Feast of St. Blaise - Blessing of the Throats

Saint Blaise feast day was yesterday, February 3. St. Blaise was one of the most popular medieval saints solemnly venerated as the patron saint of sufferers from throat diseases. Before Blaise was made bishop he was a physician possessed of wonderful healing power. Numerous miracles were also attributed to him, including the cure of diseased beasts during his refuge, thus accounting for his also being the patron saint of wild animals. He was venerated as the patron of sufferers from throat diseases in the East by the 6th century and in the West by the 9th century. Begun in the 16th century, the Blessing of St. Blaise is a ceremony still practiced and celebrated on his feast day. Two candles are consecrated and crossed before the congregation and is touched to the throats of the faithful.

Fr Terry blessed many, many throats after Mass yesterday and today!
