Our sympathy to the family of Stephen Susag

Stephen M. Susag, age 76 of Cannon Falls, died suddenly but peacefully at home on Friday afternoon, August 25, 2023.

Stephen Michael Susag was born April 8, 1947, in Minneapolis to Paul and Laverne (Peterson) Susag. He studied horticulture at several schools, moving to California for a time to work in the nursery business there. He eventually returned to Minnesota and went to work at Bachman’s. While at Bachman’s, he met his future wife Rebecca Black; she was captivated by his understated wit and they were soon married and raised three children, Marta, Peder and Esther. Steve was the parent at home for most of those years where he enjoyed keeping everyone organized and on schedule. While at home, he started a nursery business and volunteered for 4H and various activities in his local parish church of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville. His proudest achievement, besides his children and his marriage, was the landscaping at St. Joseph. He planted everything and took care of it for many years until he no longer had the energy.

Steve was a patient, kind man. He had a smile for everyone, and on his usual Tuesday shopping day every week, he made a point to talk to the people he saw. When he broke his ankle several years ago, he stated that his regular people must be wondering what happened to him, and they were.

Welcoming him into heaven will be his parents; brothers, Charles, Paul and Jay; sister, Bonnie; in-laws, Dennis Crow and Peg and Neal Black; and his dogs, Lars and Thor.

Left to mourn him along with his wife and children and his parish community are his sisters, Mary Crowe and Linda Keesling; brothers-in-law, John (Nancy) Black, Patrick (Rebecca) Black and sister-in-law, Angela Black; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and especially his St. Bernard, Nels.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday, September 1, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Miesville, with Father Terry Beeson officiating. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery.

Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening, and for one hour prior to Mass on Friday morning, all at church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to TSC Alliance 8737 Colesville Rd, Ste 400, Silver Spring, MD 20910 or donor's choice in memory of Stephen.

Arrangements are being completed by Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings.
